Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal has fast paced combat with a wide variety of interesting enemy designs and weapons, but the repetitive nature of the combat and the tedious level design and platforming make the game a slog to play at times. Although I've heard great things about how efficient Id Software's renderer is, Doom Eternal is not a great showcase due to the uninspired and unimpressive art direction. This technical achievement is also marred by the fact that Doom Eternal refuses to leave fullscreen mode and allow the user to access their desktop by not respecting Alt-Enter, Windows, ctrl-shift-esc or Alt-Tab. This means I had to quit the game to change the audio output device and had no recourse when the game's highly efficient renderer stopped rendering after my PC went to sleep. (This isn't even the only bug that affected my playthough. I had to finish a level early after fast travel broke in one level.) Other developers would be excoriated for releasing a PC game that lacks this basic functionality. Worst of all, Doom Eternal is a deeply uncool game and it's not just the art. The soundtrack is boring, the dumb story is poorly written, acted, and directed and there is absolutely no sex appeal. It's nerdy, unsexy, uncool, and marvelesque. They made Doom Guy into an alien god who gets superpowers from a tanning bed!
